History of the CTPAT Program
The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) program was established by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the business community because of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. The program when into effect in November 2001 and today consists of over 11,400* certified member companies.
The purpose of the program is to establish a more effective method for organizations within the supply chain and the U.S. government (Customs) to collaborate. At its core, the CTPAT program serves as a supply chain security initiative. Participation in the program is voluntary but certified companies must continuously work on improving security throughout their supply chain network.
