Meet Our People – Abigail Watson

Meet Abigail Watson, our dedicated Logistics Guide at Mercury, whose journey from studying biology at Ohio State to navigating the dynamic world of logistics is truly inspiring. Abigail's passion for behind-the-scenes operations and her commitment to supporting clients in the healthcare and life sciences sectors reflect her desire to make a meaningful impact. With her exceptional ability to manage challenges and build strong relationships, Abigail not only keeps our logistics running smoothly but also fosters a collaborative and positive team environment.

Can you share your journey to becoming a Logistics Guide at Mercury and what drew you to this field?

Funny enough, I went to Ohio State to study biology of all fields. I enjoyed it throughout college, but I wasn't in the position to complete as much schooling as needed for the field. After college, I found myself in an entry level sales position for another logistics company, but I quickly realized that sales was not for me either. I liked working in logistics in general, but I just wanted something a little more behind the scenes. That's when I stumbled upon the Logistics Guide position here at Mercury. I think I've found my niche here, and I love the fact that I have still have ties to healthcare and life sciences in some way.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role as a Logistics Guide? How do you typically overcome these challenges?

I would say the most challenging part is navigating through the chaos. It's not always chaos, but sometimes it can feel like everything is going wrong all at once. I try to focus only on the things that I can control and work through them one by one. That helps me stay focused and not get too overwhelmed with everything going on.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Mercury?

I love that the work we are doing is so important. We work with so many impressive clients who work in the diagnostics space, or do medical research, etc., and it feels good to know that I have an impact on so many people's lives. Josh said once that it's the part we all brag to our parents about, and it's definitely true for me.

How do you navigate and resolve conflicts that arise during the logistics process?

I think the best way to navigate issues is to keep an open, honest dialogue with the client. Our clients realize that uncontrollable issues such as weather, traffic, or simple human error are so common in the logistics world. They typically just want to be in the loop when these issues do arise.

What steps do you take to build strong relationships with clients? How do these relationships impact your work?

In my opinion, trust is the foundation of a strong relationship. Kind of going back to my last answer, open dialogue and honest communication will build a lot of trust with the client, and that will always go a long way. Having that strong relationship with our clients makes going into work every day so enjoyable. It's exciting knowing that we are somebody they can count on.

What strategies do you use to stay organized and manage multiple tasks effectively?

I'm big on keeping my routine as consistent as possible every day. The more consistent I am, the less time I have to spend on getting organized or staying organized because my day is already organized. When things get thrown off, it's easy to forget simple steps in a task, which can lead to larger issues down the road. Having my routine allows me to manage several large clients day in and day out.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

I love the old Babe Ruth quote that says something along the lines of "You can't win today's game with yesterday's homerun". It's such a good reminder that we have to execute at a high level every single day. It's also a good reminder as somebody who came into this role with little experience that I am capable of performing well in my position even though I'm new to the industry.

Can you share a memorable moment or project that you’re particularly proud of during your time at Mercury?

My favorite project I've worked on here at Mercury is helping the product team develop the portal. I think the portal is something that is going to take Mercury to the next level. It's cool to be able to have input on a product that I'm actually using myself, and I'm so excited to watch as it progresses.

How do you contribute to fostering a positive and collaborative team environment?

I think that remembering that everybody is human outside of work is important in creating a positive team environment. Having empathy for others allows us to listen to each other and value each other's opinions a little more. I like to think I've developed individual relationships with my fellow squad members.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work to unwind and recharge?

Traveling is probably my favorite thing to do in my free time. I'm also a sucker for some reality TV.
